Linda
is wheelchair-bound. She also cannot conceive, and she feels total guilt
about not being able to provide husband Sean with an heir. Accidentally
breaking an antique photograph one day, she unleashes the ghost of
Belle, a resident of the house in the 19th Century, who haunts the
nursery they'd made before Linda discovered she was barren, and making
sure Linda has less desire than ever to go into that haunted room.
It transpires that her best friend Gwyneth is pregnant, by Sean. As
Linda becomes more and more possessed by the spirit of Belle, she exacts
revenge on Sean, apparently killing him with the power of her and
Belle's minds. The two gradually become one, (an implied Belinda) and
attempt to cause Gwyneth to miscarry. The police and a therapist are not
sure whether she is really possessed or is going insane (she has a
previous occurrence of mental illness) and we are left not knowing
whether Linda has committed a crime at all, or whether she imagined the
whole thing.
The demanding part of Linda can be played by a disabled
(wheelchair-bound) actress if wished.

Author's
Notes
Inspired
by Susan Hill's magnificent thriller "The Woman in Black", (though - apart
from the scream - there are no other similarities) I started writing
this play to go alongside "Voices" - another play with
an "am I going mad?" thread.
Part way through I started
working with a disabled group and saw an opportunity to provide a meaty,
challenging role that could be taken on by a wheelchair-bound actress,
though there's no reason at all why a non-disabled actress should not
take the role.
The special effects, especially the
sinister voice of Linda as she is
"taken over" by Belle, are surprisingly simple to do, and can
be aided by a voice box available from me on free
loan if anyone wants to use it. Contact me if you need an explanation of how the
sound effects can easily be done.
I've always been one who doesn't think you need to wrap up the plotline
in a pretty pink bow at the end, so that people can go away feeling great and
wondering if they should get a Big Mac on the way home. Hopefully Whispers
will have them still debating whether Linda was genuine or totally
insane on their homeward journey.

group has done this play and have any I can use, please contact me.
