Murder Mystery Evenings are, arguably, a new form of theatre. With a traditional play script all the lines spoken (gaffes apart) are scripted, so each actor knows his or her cue lines and what to say next. With a murder game your audience is encouraged to ask questions, many of which you can't possibly anticipate, so - rather than spending hours learning lines, your actors probably have around 20 lines each, but they need to know the story very well so as to be able to give reliable answers, and they need to stay in character at all times, for example, when they meet an audience member in the bathroom! I am very enthusiastic about these evenings, and will freely offer advice and experience to anyone who wants to run one, by email or by phone. We launched a small company a few months ago to perform these events - more details on these scripts will follow, but meanwhile see www.dying4dinner.co.uk
Author's Notes I started writing games many years ago, but these were of the type you use in a private house, as part of a dinner party; the kind of thing you can buy from high street booksellers. More recently, were colluded with a local restaurant (to get custom on midweek quiet nights) to write and act out a murder mystery. It went so well that we've been doing new ones each month form the original customer and others, and I've decided to sell the scripts. They're a great way for a theatre group to raise funds doing what we like most - acting - rather than coffee mornings, cheese and wine evenings, jumble sales and so on. I supply (via email or CD) the script and all supporting documentation, including evidence, the solution, score sheets, certificates and even name badges, tailored to YOUR group if you need me to. If you have a special theme in mind, contact me and we can see if one can be devised to suit.
